Grandmaster Bobby Taboada

Bobby Taboada was introduced to the Balintawak school founded by the Great Grandmaster Venancio “Anciong” Bacon and headed at the time by Grandmasters Teofilo Velez and Jose Villasin. Grandmaster Taboada was trained in the “old school” ways of stick fighting. Grandmaster Bobby Taboada was raised in Cebu City, Philippines, the birthplace of Balintawak and a thriving martial arts culture. After studying karate and boxing and other fighting arts, Grandmaster Taboada was introduced to the Balintawak school founded by the Great Grandmaster Venancio “Anciong” Bacon and headed at the time by Grandmasters Teofilo Velez and Jose Villasin. Grandmaster Taboada was trained in the “old school” ways of stick fighting, enduring physical abuse and constant live stick training with the masters. The combination of extremely rigorous physical training, expert instruction, and guidance from masters Bacon, Velez and Villasin helped shape and produce a dynamic and highly skilled martial arts master and teacher. In 1979, Grandmaster Taboada left the Philippines and brought his art to New Zealand and Australia before being persuaded to introduce Balintawak to a US audience. In 1991, Grandmaster Taboada relocated to the United States and settled in Charlotte, North Carolina. Grandmaster Taboada, or “Bobby”, as most of his friends and students know him, still teaches at the headquarters for his Balintawak International organization, in Charlotte, NC. Since his arrival in the U.S., he’s been a self-defense instructor for the North Carolina Justice Academy and he has assisted in crime prevention programs sponsored by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Academy, and been featured in dozens of articles and magazines. Grandmaster Taboada has trained martial arts experts and practitioners all through the US and around the world, in countries such as England, Australia, Germany, and Canada. He has produced a dedicated handful of Qualified Instructors, authorized to teach his Balintawak curriculum that is scattered throughout the world as well. Always a welcome instructor at martial arts seminars, Grandmaster Taboada continues to amaze and teach students that are willing and have a desire to learn. In the year 2000, he was inducted into the World Head Council of Family Sokiship’s International Hall of Fame and was awarded the title of Millenium Grandmaster. In 2002, that same organization honored him with the title of Distinguished Grandmaster. He is well known throughout martial arts circles as a highly respected master, a great teacher, and a superb human being that has remained humble and welcoming to all he comes in contact with.

Filipino martial arts are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably and their ability turn ordinary items into weapons of personal protection. This art is historically and tactically significant with equal emphasis placed on combat utility, artistic expression, and day-to-day graciousness. – Guro Ben Salas

Additional information on Kali, Arnis, Eskrima, Escrima from Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eskrima

Eskrima, Escrima, Arnis, and Kali are umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines (“Filipino Martial Arts,” or FMA) that emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives and other bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons. It is also known as Estoque (Spanish for rapier), Estocada (Spanish for thrust or stab) and Garrote (Spanish for club). In Luzon they may go by the name of Arnis de Mano, Pananandata (use of weapons), Sinawali (Pampanga, “to weave”), Sitbatan (Pangasinan), Didya and Kabaroan (Ilocos region). In the Visayas and Mindanao, these martial arts have been referred to as eskrima, kali, kaliradman, pagaradman and kalirongan. kuntaw and silat are separate martial arts practiced in the islands.

It also includes hand-to-hand combat, joint locks, grappling and weapon disarming techniques. Although in general, emphasis is put on weapons for these arts, some systems put empty hands as the primary focus and some old school systems do not teach weapons at all.

Guro Baste Carlos will be visiting Atlanta to promote and teach Kalis Ilustrisimo! He will be sharing this unique and powerful bladed system as taught to him by various Grandmasters over the years. You do not need previous experience in bladed systems to come out and enjoy this session. You will learn the efficiency and effectiveness of this bladed weapons art and it’s practicality in combat. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn from one of the few remaining people to have learned directly from ‘Tatang’ Ilustrisimo, Tony Diego and Arnold Narzo in the United States.

Guro Baste Carlos comes to us with 25+ years of experience in Kalis Ilustrisimo, also including other styles of FMA. Having trained with some of the Masters and Grand-masters directly, Guro Baste brings a unique perspective on combative application. Training under an apprenticeship with Pekiti Tirsia’s Leo T. Gaje, as well as Jun Pueblos of LAMECO. Guro Baste weathered the hardships in the old way of training in Eskrima. This continued with ‘Tatang’ Ilustrisimo and Tony Diego in Kalis Ilustrisimo. Where training meant taking any pain the old men could dish out, until techniques were perfected. The Carlos Hermanos FMA group is the original pioneer of full contact sparring clubs in the Philippines. Everything taught will be from a no-nonsense methodology, having practiced and validated these methods in sparring. However this will not exclude real world application. We would be honored to have all that can make it come out and enjoy broadening your skillsets with one of the most time honored systems in Filipino Martial Arts.

More about Kalis Ilustrisimo

The Ilustrisimo clan from Bantayan Island in the Northern part of the Cebu region was known for their Eskrima and has practiced its own traditional stick and sword fighting style for over five generations. Its first known practitioner was Pablo Ilustrisimo who passed it on to Juan de Dios Ilustrisimo, who then passed it to the brothers Isidro, Melecio and Regino (the better known of Tatang’s uncles). Tatang was mentored by his father Isidro as well as by his uncles. Another illustrious ancestor was Agapito Ilustrismo, a rebel against the Spaniards who escaped to Mount Banahaw and established a religious cult.

Tatang retained his family style while he lived a long, storied, and tumultuous life and refined his fighting style from the influences of at least Pedro Cortez, a Zamboangueño bounty hunter, and a Tausug family who adopted him from age 10 to 17. He had his experiences as an eskrimador in various matches, as a seaman going around South-East Asia and as a security-enforcer for business establishments in various areas of the Philippines, including the Tondo-Binondo areas of Manila. He faced numerous duels, challenges as well as “death matches” with live blades. Family members that Tatang taught were his cousin Floro Villabrille (1912-1992) and his grandnephew Samuel Ilustrisimo.

Throughout most of his latter life, Tatang was secretive about his methods of fighting for they had kept him alive and undefeated for decades. It was only in 1976 that Tatang started openly teaching his refinement of the family style to “outsiders”, with Antonio “Tony” Diego (1946-2014) and Epifanio “Yuli” Romo as his first students in Manila where he had migrated. Other notable students were Christopher “Topher” Ricketts (1955–2010), Romeo “Romy” Macapagal, Pedro Reyes, Edgar Sulite (1957-1997), Rey Galang, Norman Suanico, Inocencio Glaraga, Roberto Morales (deceased 2010), Mark V. Wiley and Ernesto Talag. Prior to World War II, Tatang had also privately taught a contemporary, Timoteo Maranga (later on Major Maranga of the Cebu police force).

Even at his advanced age, Tatang retained the respect accorded him as a fighter in the tough streets of Tondo where he resided. As a testament to his reputation, archive footage of Ilustrisimo taken well into his 80s show his speed, control, timing and accuracy with sticks, blades as well as empty hand disarms against live blades in spite of his failing eyesight.

After Tatang Ilustrisimo’s death in 1997, Tony Diego was elected the head of Kalis Ilustrisimo. Tony Diego later added a descriptive to the system which became known as Kalis Ilustrisimo Orihinal Repeticion. This was on the suggestion of the late Pedro Reyes—that the senior students of Tatang should set up their own schools. Thus, there were Bakbakan Kali Ilustrisimo by Rey Galang, “Kali Ilustrisimo” by Topher Ricketts, Tagpas Kalis Ilustrisimo by Romy Macapagal, Luneta Kali Ilustrisimo by Pedro Reyes and Samuel Ilustrisimo and Olistrisimo Eskrima by Roberto Morales. Romy Macapagal, as archivist of the Kalis Ilustrisimo system and not founding a school, dropped “Tagpas” and retained Kalis Ilustrismo.

Diego had named Tom Dy Tang as successor of Kalis Ilustrismo twelve years prior to his death (2002). Diego died on August 25, 2014. . Peachie Baron teaches GM Diego’s “Punta y Daga” style. Arnold Narzo was appointed as Kalis Ilustrisimo Chief Instructor by GM Diego two years (2012) before his death (2014).

The Counterpoint Tactical System, also known by the acronym CTS, is a weapon-based integrated martial art designed for the street with an emphasis on real-world tactical counter offense. Although an eclectic martial art, the counterpoint tactical systems largest traditional influence can be found in the Filipino Martial Arts. The purpose of CTS is to train and certify students and instructors, making them well versed in every phase of civilian armed and unarmed combat. The CTS curriculum is designed with a survival based philosophy and is not intended to be practiced or used as a sport. CTS uses a “Civilian Use of Force Continuum” to help students better understand real world violence and how to appropriately respond to a very dangerous situation.
Being an integrated martial art, CTS uses tactics from various arts based on multiple attackers, weapons, range or strategy to formulate a cohesive curriculum. As the range changes so does the combative tactics. Categories of training include weapons techniques such as single and double stick, knife, staff, gun, and the combination of stick and dagger; and empty hand techniques such as kicking, stomping, striking, punching, trapping, locking, throwing and ground fighting.

Zach Whitson – Counterpoint Tactical Systems seminar

The Counterpoint Tactical System is designed as a modern, real world survival based martial art. The CTS curriculum does not focus on sport competition or one dimensional self-defense techniques. We only teach and practice techniques and tactics that are proven to work against a skilled and experienced enemy.

Our primary goal is to teach and develop our student’s skill sets with the most real and effective martial arts training available today. We want to help you develop a healthy life, and to teach you how to protect yourself and your loved ones while providing a safe practice and training environment.

CTS uses an open motor training model to develop life saving skills and habits. As trainers, we live in the world of simple, direct and effective tactics, avoiding all action that has a low probability of success. We also offer a children’s curriculum designed to be fun and effective in teaching young students to be respectful of others and capable of protecting themselves from unwanted aggression.

Currently, many martial arts instructors believe that they must water down their training to make it palatable to the students of today’s fast food culture. We have not gone this route. We use training models that are fun and comprehensive making accelerated learning a reality. As students find success in application, their confidence grows, they practice more often and their tactical survival skills improve exponentially.
