Filipino martial arts are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably and their ability turn ordinary items into weapons of personal protection. This art is historically and tactically significant with equal emphasis placed on combat utility, artistic expression, and day-to-day graciousness. – Guro Ben Salas

The Counterpoint Tactical System, also known by the acronym CTS, is a weapon-based integrated martial art designed for the street with an emphasis on real-world tactical counter offense. Although an eclectic martial art, the counterpoint tactical systems largest traditional influence can be found in the Filipino Martial Arts. The purpose of CTS is to train and certify students and instructors, making them well versed in every phase of civilian armed and unarmed combat. The CTS curriculum is designed with a survival based philosophy and is not intended to be practiced or used as a sport. CTS uses a “Civilian Use of Force Continuum” to help students better understand real world violence and how to appropriately respond to a very dangerous situation.
Being an integrated martial art, CTS uses tactics from various arts based on multiple attackers, weapons, range or strategy to formulate a cohesive curriculum. As the range changes so does the combative tactics. Categories of training include weapons techniques such as single and double stick, knife, staff, gun, and the combination of stick and dagger; and empty hand techniques such as kicking, stomping, striking, punching, trapping, locking, throwing and ground fighting.

Zach Whitson – Counterpoint Tactical Systems seminar

The Counterpoint Tactical System is designed as a modern, real world survival based martial art. The CTS curriculum does not focus on sport competition or one dimensional self-defense techniques. We only teach and practice techniques and tactics that are proven to work against a skilled and experienced enemy.

Our primary goal is to teach and develop our student’s skill sets with the most real and effective martial arts training available today. We want to help you develop a healthy life, and to teach you how to protect yourself and your loved ones while providing a safe practice and training environment.

CTS uses an open motor training model to develop life saving skills and habits. As trainers, we live in the world of simple, direct and effective tactics, avoiding all action that has a low probability of success. We also offer a children’s curriculum designed to be fun and effective in teaching young students to be respectful of others and capable of protecting themselves from unwanted aggression.

Currently, many martial arts instructors believe that they must water down their training to make it palatable to the students of today’s fast food culture. We have not gone this route. We use training models that are fun and comprehensive making accelerated learning a reality. As students find success in application, their confidence grows, they practice more often and their tactical survival skills improve exponentially.

More about WOTBAG
Teovel’s Balintawak Arnis was renowned by our late Great Grandmaster “Teofilo Velez”. He was the one who started propagating art of balintawak arnis, GM Teofilo Velez & Late GM Atty. Villasen they are the one who initiate to modify on how to teach Balintawak arnis in easiest way for students. The Velez Brothers (Chito, Eddie, Monnie) are known to be his successors and the first ever instructors of GM Teofilo Velez are his sons: Pacito “Chito” Velez, Ramon Franco “Monnie” Velez, and Eduardo “Eddie” Velez Sr.

When Late GM Teofilo Velez passed away because of cancer, Mr. Chito Velez was chosen by the members to be the New Grand Master of Teovel’s Balintawak Arnis. Few years after, the Velez Brothers continued teaching the Balintawak style of arnis. GrandMaster Monnie Velez teaches arnis at his home in Englis,Guadalupe Cebu and later at Ayala Park while GrandMaster Eddie Velez teaches arnis at one of our Headquarters in Guadalupe, Cebu. By the year 2007, the Velez Brothers regrouped. GrandMaster Monnie Velez and his students came up with the name of WOTBAG which stands for “World Original Teovel’s Balintawak Arnis Group”. With the help of Master Oliver Mag-uyon, they were able to register the group to the Secretary of Exchange Commission in order for it to be legalized and they were also able to elect new sets of officers.

Now the The Three Pillar’s( Velez Brothers ) introduced a new method of teaching, focusing on the students’ performance on flexibility, timing, speed, hitting points, defense and offense, knife fighting. They were also able to share their tactical skills by using all the knowledge they have learned during their training with their late father, Great Grandmaster Teofilo Velez which he also learned from his late mentor, Great Grandmaster Anciong Bacon, who introduced the Balintawak Style. Now we have our WOTBAG and IPMAF Balintawak Eskrima Poland Association by cooperation of Agreement by their Chairman GM Dr. Andreas Boruta as official representative of WOTBAG in Europe will help on developing and propagating WOTBAG.

About GAT Puno Abon “Garimot” Baet”

Founder/President
Garimot Arnis Training Global
Laguna Arnis Federation International
World Harimaw Buno Federation
Hilot Research Center USA

Gat Puno Abundio “Garimot” Baet (also known as Gat Puno Abon), was born and raised in Paete, Laguna Philippines, and he is the fourth son of Grandmaster Felipe “Garimot” Baet. Gat Puno Abon teaches the family “Garimot” System, a complete martial art system that is strong in all combat ranges and is over 150 years old, and it is an art that has existed in the Baet family for over five generations.

Gat Puno Abon “Garimot” Baet began his training under his father’s instruction at the age of seven. He began training with Arnis de Mano starting with the footwork and the initial basic attacks known as the Abecedario. Later, Grandmaster Felipe Baet went on to teach him Cinco Teros (5 ways of attack), Siete Colores (the 7 colors, a legendary seven angle Largo Mano system), and Doce Pares (the 12 Masters system, a 12 angle system originating in Laguna in the 1600’s), and the basic defense for each angle of attack for each.

His father also taught him the double stick, Sinawali, and basic knife fighting techniques including Balisong. His training then moved on to the application of Mano-mano (hand to hand) combat techniques, and the grappling system of the Filipino Aborigines that is called Harimaw Buno (Tiger Style Wrestling). Gat Puno Abon continued his training with his father, eventually mastering even the most advanced techniques and concepts of the system.

Eager to learn (or “absorb”) even more, Gat Puno Abon sought out other masters from Laguna, each a specialist in one of the following: Largo Mano, Sobrada Herada, Largo Mano & Herada Corto de Abaniko, Crossado Corto de Cinco, Sobrada de San Miguel, & Herada Corto de Payong. He trained under each Master until reaching mastery. After a decade of intense training, Gat Puno Abon joined full contact, no padding, stick fighting competitions at Sixteen years of age. He lived up to the family tradition of victory by becoming a full contact, unpadded stick fighter and undefeated stylist of Arnis de Mano. He competed in the Laguna provinces of Paete, Lumban, Magdalena, Siniloan, Majayjay, and Famy. He held his title as undefeated Stickfighter from 1978-1985 (at which time he started on his journey to move to the US). He continued his training alone in the US, and then, with his father’s blessing, began teaching the “Garimot” system in the US, including Arnis and Buno. In 1989 he founded the Laguna Arnis Federation, and Harimaw Buno Federation (Philippine Martial Arts, Garimot system, USA). Later he added the acronym P.A.E.T.E. (Paaralan ng Arnis – Estokada at Tradisyonal Eskrima)in honor of his hometown of Paete, Laguna in the Philippines. He teaches self defense, stick fighting (laban baston), knife fighting (laban daga), empty hand combat (mano-mano), and buno (Filipino wrestling). His teaching of Arnis is based on the original Moro-moro stage play (the “Garimot” system includes all 30 sequences of the moro-moro). The Moro- moro is where arnis, eskrima and estokada originated. Gat Puno Abon “Garimot” Baet is a fifth generation grandmaster. He is a supporter and promoter of the PAETE ARNIS FEDERATION and The CENTURION ORIGINAL (formerly Paete Arnis Club). Gat Puno Abon has been featured in different publications including The Philippine American Journal, Inside Kung-Fu, and The Karate Voice. He has given numerous seminars and demonstrations, including to civic & local organizations, law enforcement, and other martial arts groups locally and across the country.

Abon “Garimot” Baet is proud of the achievements that he has reached in Arnis, and as such he never forgets to acknowledge the other masters of Arnis de Mano that he was able to train under.

They are as follows: Maestro Rufino “Pining” Absin (Paete, Laguna) – Largo Mano
Maestro Tomas Baldemor (Paete, Laguna) – Sobrada Herada
Maestro Clemente “Ente” Afunggol (Paete, Laguna) – Largo Mano de Abaniko
Maestro “Indo” Afunggol (Paete, Laguna) – Herada Corto de Abaniko
Maestro Jose “Peping”Dimasaka (Paete, Laguna) – Largo Mano
Maestro Victor Afu David (Paete, Laguna) – Crossado Corto de Cinco
Maestro Alejandro “Andoy” Cacaos (Lumban, Laguna) – Sobrada de San Miguel
Maestro Juan “John” Ladiana (Lumban, Laguna) – Sobrada de San Miguel
Maestro Totoy Acuno (San Antonio, Kalayaan, Laguna) – Herada Corto de Payong
Maestra Myrna “Mana” Cadang (Paete, Laguna)

The experience of training with all of these well-respected Masters, including his own father Grandmaster Felipe “Garimot” Baet, in combination with the numerous experiences including victorious combat in full contact, unpadded stick fighting competitions, has formed today’s Gat Puno Abon “Garimot” Baet.

More about Grand Master Bobby Taboada

GM Taboada was introduced to the Balintawak school founded by the Great Grand Master Venancio “Anciong” Bacon, and headed at the time by Grand Masters Teofilo Velez and Jose Villasin. GM Taboada was trained in the “old school” ways of stick fighting.

gm bobby taboadaGrand Master Bobby Taboada was raised in Cebu City, Philippines, the birthplace of Balintawak and a thriving martial arts culture. After studying karate and boxing and other fighting arts, GM Taboada was introduced to the Balintawak school founded by the Great Grand Master Venancio “Anciong” Bacon, and headed at the time by Grand Masters Teofilo Velez and Jose Villasin. GM Taboada was trained in the “old school” ways of stick fighting, enduring physical abuse and constant live stick training with the masters. The combination of extremely rigorous physical training, expert instruction, and guidance from masters Bacon, Velez and Villasin helped shape and produce a dynamic and highly skilled martial arts master and teacher. In 1979, GM Taboada left the Philippines and brought his art to New Zealand and Australia before being pursuaded to introduce Balintawak to a US audience. In 1991, GM Taboada relocated to the United States and settled in Charlotte, North Carolina.

GM Taboada, or “Bobby”, as most of his friends and students know him, still teaches at the headquarters for his Balintawak International organization, in Charlotte, NC. Since his arrival in the U.S., he’s been a self-defense instructor for the North Carolina Justice Academy and he has assisted in crime prevention programs sponsored by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Academy, and been featured in dozens of articles and magazines. GM Taboada has trained martial arts experts and practitioners all through the US and around the world, in countries such as England, Australia, Germany, and Canada. He has produced a dedicated handful of Qualified Instructors, authorized to teach his Balintawak curriculum that are scattered throughout the world as well. Always a welcome instructor at martial arts seminars, GM Taboada continues to amaze and teach students that are willing and have a desire to learn.

In the year 2000, he was inducted into the World Head Council of Family Sokiship’s International Hall of Fame and was awarded the title of Millenium Grand Master. In 2002, that same organization honored him with the title of Distinguished Grand Master. He is well known throughout martial arts circles as a highly respected master, a great teacher, and a superb human being that has remained humble and welcoming to all he comes in contact with.
