More about Filipino Martial Arts(Kali, Eskrima, Arnis)

Arnis, also known as Kali or Eskrima, is the national sport and martial art of the Philippines. The three are roughly interchangeable umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines (“Filipino Martial Arts,” or FMA) that emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons and various improvised weapons. It is also known as Estoque (Spanish for rapier), Estocada (Spanish for thrust or stab) and Garrote (Spanish for club). In Luzon they may go by the name of Arnis de Mano.

The indigenous martial art that the Spanish encountered in 1610 was not yet called “Arnis” at that time. During those times, this martial art was known as Paccalicali-t to the Ibanags,[2] Didya (later changed to Kabaroan) to the Ilocanos, Sitbatan or Kalirongan to Pangasinenses, Sinawali to the Kapampangans (“to weave”), Calis or Pananandata (use of weapons) to the Tagalogs, Pagaradman to the Ilonggos and Kaliradman to the Cebuanos. Kuntaw and Silat are separate martial arts that are also practiced in the Philippine Archipelago.

  1. Hello Atlanta FMA. I trained in Kali years ago and I’m looking to get back into it. I don’t see anyone offering Kali near Evans, Ga. Know of anyone in that area?

  2. hello all, i am looking for any kali training groups in the middle georgia area, warner robins and surrounding area, thanks and besafe all.

    • I’m not aware of any. But join up with the Facebook group “Atlanta FMA” and ask the same, you may find someone who does know.

  3. I know it’s a long distance away but does anyone know of any FMA schools/instructors in the Fort Rucker area of southeastern Alabama? All I can find so far is karate and taekwondo. I know there are some schools in norhtern AL but they are at least a 2 hr drive away and with my work schedule it’s not possible…any info that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated…thank you

  4. David,

I used to live in the Dothan area and unfortunately there are no FMA schools in that area. Best you can hope for are private lessons maybe from guys out of Birmingham or Pensacola. Sorry, hope this helps.

    • There is Atlanta Martial Arts Center, not sure if they offering Silat. I know Alan Baker teaches Silat, you would need to check with the school to see if it’s on the schedule. Alternatively, there is Michael Reids school, bit further of a drive, but they are a Kuntao Silat school.

  7. Hey, thanks for setting this board up; great source of info!

I recently spent some time training in Sayoc Kali through the military, and really loved the application and training style. Looking into FMA, it seems like there is a lack of locations in Intown Atlanta/Midtown. Does anyone know of anywhere in that area that offers FMA?

    Thanks,
    Gabe

    • Hey, glad you like the site. I’m not sure about availability intown, there were some but I think they have moved. There is the Atlanta Kali Group in Sandy Springs, also OCC in Buford Rd area. I’ll check with some people and see if there are some classes in the midtown area if you haven’t found any already.

      Thanks!

  9. Do you know of any locations in Northwest Georgia? Specifically, any places near Dalton? A 2 hour drive one-way isn’t impossible for me, but it is difficult . . .

    • I’ll have to get back to you on this, I believe their is a gentleman up north that teaches FMA. I’ll dig into and respond. Thanks!

  11. Hey y’all, I am new to all this and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good school for Kali. I am from Marietta and willing to drive up to 40+ minutes out for a quality school.

    • Hey Joe,

Apologies for the late reply. If you’re in Marietta, I would recommend Jemar Carcellar – he teaches Balintawak on Saturdays at 12:30 PM. He teaches out of the Budokan Dojo in Smyrna.

Balintawak is a system in Kali out of the Visayas region on the Philippines.
